Question:  Can Actonel (risedronate) cause difficulty swallowing?

Answer:
Actonel (risedronate) is a medication used to treat osteoporosis.  It is very important that people who take this medication can swallow and stand or sit upright for 30 minutes after taking the medication.

The reason is that Actonel can be very irritating to the esophagus.

Difficulty swallowing , feelings of fullness, heartburn, and similar symptoms can indicate potential damage or irritation of the esophagus or stomach due to the medication.

If you experience these symptoms or if they worsen you should discontinue the medication and contact your personal physician for an evaluation.
